A friend reached out to me about designing a logo for their friend’s Instagram based business making plugs.
I was shown a text conversation with a few themes and ideas that the client would be interested in:
- pastel pink
- coral
- mint
- something ‘girly’
- a profile of a girl with gauges
- script font
With that, I set to research. I know I wanted to play with the profile idea and find a way to make it either edgy or at least show and ‘Alt Girl’ due to gauges being less of a mainstream type of accessory. I googled the type of style I was aiming for and gathered inspiration.
I started out with some simple pencil sketches that I ended up filling in with markers to get the profile effect. It was when I started to play with the type that I settled into a couple of designs that I wanted to present.
Initial sketches Scanned and cleaned up
I realized that I had done ‘gauges by Emma’ in my sketches and the actual shop name was ‘Plugs by Emma’ so I needed to clean it up and change the type before I could show her what I had come up with.
I used Adobe Scan to take a picture of my scan and erased the writing. I used that pdf as the basis for my Illustrator work.
